Do you remember the old advertising slogan "Lions or Nothing", well another slogan springs to mind as well,  the ad for a certain petrol brand which said "Put a Tiger in your Tank" ... well Mrs O'Malley had her own version of that slogan which went something like "put a Lion in your Belly" ... she reckoned they were a great energy boost!

So why are they called Wine Gums?
To explain the name, many fanciful explanations have been invented. For example, one explanation is that the name comes from the lingering, subtle fruit flavours that make it "similar to the experience of savouring a fine wine". The sweets are frequently given the names of alcoholic drinks, including port, sherry, champagne, claret, hock, gin, Rioja, Chablis and Burgundy.

Whilst we love (and indeed often propogate) this romantic explaination, the truth is a little less exciting - Wine gums were originally created by mixing fermented wine with a gelling agent, of course Modern winegums no longer contain wine.

According to Cadbury Schweppes, red and black are the most popular colours. The red flavours are traditionally red berry, strawberry, or raspberry-flavoured in the United Kingdom and cherry in the United States. Black is traditionally blackcurrant flavoured although can be licquorice flavour in some brands.
